Meet Dwain
Dwain Kindelberger is an American Fitness Professional… Personal Fitness Trainer, Nutritionist, Lifestyle Coach, former World-Class Bodybuilder as well as the owner and founder of Designer Bodies ‘World Class Gym’ in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Historically, Dwain is known for being one of the original Personal Trainers to come out of the World-Famous Gold’s Gym in Venice, California during the Golden Era of Fitness and Bodybuilding.
Interestingly, Dwain was one of the very first N.A.S.M. “National Academy of Sports Medicine” certified personal trainers in New Mexico more than 35 years ago. Dwain originally traveled to Chicago to take the practical and written exams at the original National Academy of Sports Medicine, where Dr. Robert Goldman founded the academy. Today everything is handled on-line to become an NASM certified personal trainer. Unfortunately, there is no longer a practical exam required.
Dwain’s fitness journey began as an elementary school kid growing up in Rural Western Pennsylvania eating clean healthy foods with his family and exercising with mom before school. Dwain also studied and participated in Judo and Shotokan Karate throughout his childhood. However, Motocross Racing was his sport of choice and primary focus into his early teens.
Strength training with a basic weight set in his basement, while running the woodlands of his family’s 48plus acre homestead, and training on a Universal Weight Machine at the local YMCA became a passion for Dwain as early as 10 years of age, mainly for conditioning and to get stronger for the rigors of motocross racing.
After his parents’ divorce at age 13, Dwain decided to give up motocross, mainly because of the huge family and financial commitment associated with motocross. Thinking he may go back to it after high school.
At age 14 Dwain started hitching rides with his uncle and some older guys from his High School to the Westmoreland County Community College, in Youngwood, Pennsylvania to workout at the college’s bodybuilding gym. This gym had everything needed to body build given the time-period. It was during this time frame that Dwain became more and more interested in bodybuilding as several of his new friends from the community college gym competed in local and regional bodybuilding competitions around Western Pennsylvania.
Dwain also became a member of a private barbell key-club formed by some local older guys who rented a big garage from a funeral home and packed it full of mostly home-made gym equipment with cast-iron weights and bars. Note: This key club and most Pennsylvania gyms at that time had little to no heat in the winter nor ACs for the humid hot steamy summers… These humble times make for great memories!
At age 16, Dwain entered his first bodybuilding competition. The 1980 Teenage Mr. Pittsburgh in May of that year, where he placed 13th out of 17 competitors in his height class. Humbly, Dwain went to the judges and asked, what do I need to improve on to get better and place higher? The judges feedback was solid advice. Add more size to his overall leg development. Dwain went to the gym the next day and asked his older friend, Frank Palmer, a squatting machine, (as Dwain liked to refer his friend), to teach him how to squat properly. Frank said, Dwain, I thought you’d never ask! Frank eagerly took Dwain to the power cage where he proceeded to show proper squat form, amongst his other leg training “secrets’.
Over the next 6 months Dwain’s focus was set on improving the overall size and quality of his legs while not neglecting his upper body training… Long story short. Dwain Kindelberger entered the 1980 Westmoreland County Open Bodybuilding Championships in October 1980, where he beat everyone who had placed ahead of him six months earlier!
Bodybuilding and fitness in general were becoming more, and more popular with each passing year because of television shows like The Incredible Hulk featuring Lou Ferrigno and movies like Conan the Barbarian starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Along with the availability bodybuilding and fitness magazines at local news and checkout stands everywhere!
By age 21, after numerous class wins and several overall bodybuilding titles on the east coast, Dwain decided to move to Southern California to train and learn from the Pros at the legendary Gold’s Gym during bodybuilding and fitness’s Golden Era.
It is there that he made personal training a career that included training many celebrities as well executives from around the Los Angeles area.
Dwain competed in bodybuilding periodically from 1980 through 1992, competing and guest posing at NPC competitions spanning from Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia, California to New Mexico. Some of his notable competitive accomplishments included 1st Place 1981 Teenage GNC Bodybuilding Classic plus awards for Best Arms, Best Legs and Most Muscular. 1st place 1981 Teenage Tennessee Choo-Choo Classic in Chattanooga Tennessee. 1st Place 1982 Teenage Eastern America and Overall, Champion. 1985 NPC Tri-States Bodybuilding 1st place and Overall, Champion, 1985 NPC Mr. Pittsburgh 1st Place in Height Class and 2nd Place Overall. 1st Place 1990 NPC Southern California vs Northern California Bodybuilding Championship. 1st 1992 NPC Albuquerque Bodybuilding Championships, 1st Place 1992 NPC New Mexico State Bodybuilding Championships, 1992 NPC Western USA Bodybuilding Championships and 2018 Master’s Over 50 NPC Mid-USA Bodybuilding Championships.
Business/Designer Bodies took priority over bodybuilding from late 1993 forward.
Dwain Kindelberger operated Designer Bodies ‘Personal Training and Nutrition Management’ out of the Montgomery Plaza Gold’s Gym in Albuquerque, where he paid rent for 10 years from late 1993 through 2003.
Dwain and his wife Doris built a custom home on the westside of Albuquerque that include a custom 1,000 sq ft home gym equipped to train themselves and their clients. Not expecting to be booked training clients from 5:00 am until 7-8 pm in 2005 they decided to focus on moving from their home-based business to the Corrales Shopping Center opening in January of 2006.
